Sing Through The Wind
The wind whistled through the rotten, moss covered trees of the forest. The black sky covered the luminous moon. No stars could be seen tonight.
Below on the ground a silhouette stirred. Whispers sang in unison. A wolf growled making the remaining crows flutter away.
The silhouette stared at the wolf. The canine whimpered and ran off into the depths of the forest.
In the distance a chilling howl broke the short silence. The icy wind blew harder and carried the dead leaves off into the still and lifeless horizon.
Sarah woke up to a small tapping sound on the window. Tap. Tap. Tap.
She sat upright, wrapping her sheets around her. As her heart rate increased her breathing grew louder. The tapping slowly came to a stop. She put her hand over her mouth and sat frozen.
After a few moments, dragging her sheets with her, she made her way slowly towards the window. Everything was pitch black. She struggled blindly.
When she was about a metre away the window creaked. She saw the shadow of the window slowly opening. Sarah wanted to scream, but the sound never escaped her lips.
The icy wind circled her, carrying a young girl's voice which was singing quietly and hauntingly. The words Sarah could not understand, but the message seemed clear. Someone, or something, was coming after her.
A shadowy figure climbed through the window. Sarah's heart began to race as the shadow came slowly towards her. Thud thud. Thud thud. It reached out for her, edging closer. Her heart pounded against her chest. The shadowy figure was almost a centimetre away from her. Thud thud. Thud thud...
Suddenly everything turned to white. Sarah gasped for breath as she quickly sat up in her bed. She took in her surroundings. Everything was familiar.
The sun shone brightly through the blinds of her window. Still not sure of what to believe, Sarah ran over towards the window. She closed both locks and both blinds. She turned away.
The wind whistled through the tiny hole of the lock. Sarah thought she could hear a voice singing to her. It was only a dream, she told herself. Still, the sound made goosebumps rise on her arms. It felt like something was crawling in her skin. She shuddered and walked away.
The house was empty. It was a Saturday. Sarah checked the digital clock on the kitchen side. It read; 06:00am. Eleven hours on my own...
The old wooden door creak loudly. Sarah jumped back.
Meow. spoke the little creature that had just entered.
Sarah gave a sigh of relief. Are you hungry Bug?
The cat licked his lips.
Sarah fed Bug and herself, and then went back to her room. She got out her sketch pad and started to draw. Once she was finished she was horrified with the result; by accident she had drawn her window, and it was wide open. Next to it was a silhouette of a young girl. She had her mouth open as if she was singing. Sarah let go of her pad and it dropped to the floor. She sat still in shock for a while. I'm losing my mind, she thought. I've got to get out of here.
Running through fields and hidden paths, Sarah looked behind her every few seconds. She felt the presence of someone, or something. The sun was setting and the wind was growing colder. Soon Sarah would be in complete darkness.
At last she came to a stop. She was in a forest. But this forest wasn't ordinary. The trees were unhealthy; bark easily crumbled off. The surrounding bark was covered in thick, dark green moss. Branches grew anywhere they could, leaving the forest looking like every tree had been shot by lightning.
An owl glided past Sarah's face. Above blackbirds and robins left their nests noisily. Mice hid under the decaying leaves and twigs. The forest was now in darkness.
Silence. Sarah walked forward a few inches, but found herself caught by branches. She started to panic as she realised she wasn't going to find a way out. She was trapped in the forest. Alone.
In the distance a wolf howled. Sarah hugged her knees tighter. She started to whimper as she saw eyes gleaming in the moonlight some metres ahead of her. She started to sing to herself for comfort.
......And the sun will set for you.
The sun will set for you.
And the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey.
And the sun will set for you......
The wind blew harder. It sent chilling shudders up her spine. Sarah looked around herself.
She sang louder. ......And the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey.
And the sun
Will set for you. sang the wind.
Sarah immediately stopped singing. She looked ahead of her and froze.
About two metres away stood the silhouette of a young girl. In the faint light Sarah could see her teeth glistening. The young girl was smiling.
Sarah tried to stand up but the icy wind had paralysed her. Her muscles ached. The young girl hissed through her deadly teeth. Her eyes gleamed with passion. Passion for killing.
Stay away! Sarah tried to say. But the words had barely escaped her lips.
The young girl grinned and moved slowly, hauntingly, towards her. She started to sing the song which Sarah had heard in her dream. It was carried by the wind, and it circled Sarah's ears. Leaves danced around her.
Sarah started to feel tired. The song was like a ghastly lullaby, sending Sarah off into the deepest sleep so that the young girl could claim her prize.
Only just able to leave her heavy eyelids open, Sarah could see death before her. The young girl reached out for Sarah, singing her lullaby. Her shadowy, dark hands stretched out to grab hold of her victim. In one last blink Sarah saw the deadly smile spread across the young girl's shadowed face.
Y el sol fijará para usted,
el sol fijará para usted.
Y la sombra del día abrazará el mundo en gris.
Y el sol fijará para usted.
The wind whistled through the rotten, moss covered trees of the forest. The black sky covered the luminous moon. No stars could be seen tonight.
In the distance a chilling howl broke the silence. The icy wind blew harder and carried the dead leaves off into the still and lifeless horizon. The world was silent once again.
